The Delfin submarine, launched in 1903, was the first combat-capable submarine of the Imperial Russian Navy, marking the beginning of Russia’s efforts to develop a modern submarine fleet. Built during a period of global experimentation with underwater vessels, Delfin showcased Russia’s engineering capabilities and laid the groundwork for future advancements in submarine design. Designed by Ivan Grigoryevich Bubnov, one of Russia’s first submarine engineers, it featured a dual propulsion system with a gasoline engine for surface propulsion and an electric motor for submerged operations. This early system, while innovative, was also hazardous due to the volatility of gasoline fuel.

The submarine had a displacement of 113 tons surfaced and 126 tons submerged, with a length of 19.6 meters. It could reach a speed of 9 knots on the surface and 4 knots underwater, with a surface range of 120 nautical miles and a submerged range of 7.5 nautical miles. Delfin was armed with two external torpedo tubes mounted along its hull, carrying rudimentary torpedoes as its primary weapon. Operated by a crew of 12 sailors, the submarine primarily served in the Baltic Fleet, conducting experimental and training missions.
Although Delfin did not see combat during the Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905), it highlighted the potential of submarines for coastal defense and strategic purposes. Despite its technical limitations and relatively short service life, it served as a crucial stepping stone for Russia’s submarine development. Delfin’s legacy is significant, as it inspired subsequent designs and established the foundation for a burgeoning submarine program that would evolve over the decades. Today, it remains a symbol of Russia’s early innovations in naval engineering.
